Blog by London Fashion Illustrator Elyse Blackshaw
As a London-based artist and contemporary fashion illustrator, I have the privilege of immersing myself in the vibrant and ever-evolving world of fashion. Specialising in bold, playful, and colourful artwork, my journey has led me to explore various facets of fashion illustration in 2025, from live event sketching to digital storytelling, education, and large-scale collaborations.

Live Event Illustration: Capturing people in the moment
One of the most exhilarating aspects of my work is live event illustration. There's an unparalleled thrill in capturing the essence of a moment as it unfolds, whether it's at exclusive brand launches, runway shows, or intimate VIP gatherings. For instance, during London Fashion Week, I've had the opportunity to document the dynamic energy of the shows through vibrant sketches that resonate with both the audience and the designers. These live illustrations offer a unique, handcrafted perspective that photography often cannot, bringing a personal touch to the portrayal of fashion.

Digital and Social Media: Bridging Art and Audience
In today's digital age, social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have become indispensable tools for artists. They allow us to share our creative processes, engage with a global audience, and collaborate with brands in innovative ways. Through time-lapse videos, animated illustrations, and interactive content, I strive to bring fashion to life on screen, making it accessible and engaging for a diverse audience. This digital presence not only amplifies the reach of my artwork but also fosters a community of fashion enthusiasts and fellow creatives. It's even more exiting when notable designers share your artwork!

Education and Workshops: Nurturing the Next Generation
Sharing knowledge and inspiring budding artists is a passion close to my heart. With over 10 years of teaching experience, I've had the honor of serving as a Graduate Fashion Week Judge for the Fashion Illustration Award and a Visiting Lecturer at institutions like the Manchester School of Art and the University for the Creative Arts. Through workshops and lectures, I aim to demystify the art of fashion illustration, blending traditional techniques with modern digital tools. These educational endeavors are designed to empower students to find their unique voice and navigate the evolving landscape of fashion art.

Collaborations: Transforming Spaces with Art
Collaborating with brands and communities to transform spaces through art is another fulfilling dimension of my work. From designing hand-painted window displays for retailers to creating large-scale murals, these projects allow me to merge fashion illustration with environmental design. For example, partnering with local communities to create murals not only beautifies public spaces but also fosters a sense of collective identity and pride. These collaborations are a testament to the transformative power of art in both commercial and communal settings.

The Evolving Role of Fashion Illustrators
Being a fashion illustrator in 2025 is a multifaceted journey that blends artistry with technology, education, and community engagement. It's about capturing the ephemeral beauty of fashion in real-time, leveraging digital platforms to share that beauty widely, educating others to continue the tradition, and collaborating to bring art into everyday spaces. As the industry continues to evolve, so too does the role of the fashion illustrator, adapting to new mediums and opportunities while staying true to the core of creative expression.
In this dynamic landscape, I remain committed to pushing the boundaries of fashion illustration, embracing new challenges, and finding joy in every stroke of the brush or stylus. The fusion of live artistry, digital innovation, educational outreach, and collaborative projects makes this an exciting time to be a fashion illustrator, and I look forward to the creative adventures that lie ahead!
